2012 Polish Barista Championships
Report by Tom Obracaj
Between the 21st and 23rd March, during the EuroGastro trade-fair in Warsaw, the 11th Polish Barista Championships (PMB) took place, which we, as Apro-Trade, once again had the pleasure of organising. During this time we had the chance to observe the best of our Polish baristas compete in two competitions: the Polish Barista Championship and the Brewers Cup.
The first day saw the Barista Championship semi-finals take place, where 14 of the best Polish baristas presented their skills. Each barista was challenged to present 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos and 4 espresso-based signature drinks.
After a full day of competition, our 6 finalists (above) were announced: Leszek Jędrasik, Agnieszka Rojewska, Sławek Saran, Agnieszka Fleischer, Michał Knap-Dam and Kasia Zyzało.
The second day saw the 2nd Polish Brewers Cup Championship, organised by Filip Bartelak of Consonni. Following the first round, the judges chose the 6 finalists: Leszek Jędrasik, Mikołaj Panasik, Rafał Kaniewski, Marcin Wójciak, Michał Dąbrowski, Błażej Stempin.
The best at this year’s final proved to be Marcin Wójciak, who became the Polish Brewers cup Champion 2012. The runner-up was Mikołaj Panasik and third place went to Rafał Kaniewski.
On the third day of the trade fair we had the Polish Barista Championship Final, where 6 baristas competed for the title of the Polish Champion 2012, as well as the opportunity to represent Poland at the World Barista Championships 2012 in Vienna.
As in every year, the Polish judges were joined by other judges from abroad, adding more prestige to the event. Once again the stress of the contestants went through the roof. However the one that coped best was Katarzyna Zyzało, (left) who became this year’s Polish Champion.
The runner-up was Leszek Jędrasik and in third place was Michał Knap-Dam.
We would like to thank our sponsors: MK Café, EuroGastro and Bero Polska.

Polish Barista Championship - Finals 2011
Report by Tom Obracaj
Between the 23rd and 25th March, during the Eurogastro tradefair in Warsaw, the 10th Annual Polish Barista championships took place. During this time we had the chance to observe as the best of the Baristas in Poland came together to battle it out for the following titles: Latte Art champion, Coffee in Good Spirits and of course The Polish Barista Championship. Once again, there was a lot of emotion, nerves, stress and, of course, great joy for the winners. Many friends and other supporters of the contestants turned up in numbers to witness the event. The fantastic atmosphere during the championships will long live in the memory or the contestants and the organisers alike.
The first to enjoy success this year was Leszek Jędrasik, taking the title of Latte Art Champion, at the same time booking himself a a trip to Maastricht, where he will represent Poland at the World Championships. Not far behind Leszek in the rankings were Mateusz Gaca and Agnieszka Rojewska. To gain the title, our new Latte Art Champion had to overcome the following challengers:
Leszek Jędrasik – Ipanema Café (23.0 pts)
Mateusz Gaca – Brisman (22.0 pts)
Agnieszka Rojewska – Brisman (21.0 pts)
Marcin Kozicki – Green Coffee
Maciej Pomorski – Relaks
Michał Pluta – i-coffee
Jacek Ostrowski – Green Coffee
Piotr Kaczorowski – Coffeeheaven
Ewelina Kozłowska – i-coffee
Artur Porada – Kofeina
Krzysztof Szkutnik – Espresso Service
The next person left smiling was Ela Citak, as she gained the title of Coffee in Good Spirits Champion. She showed great precision and professionalism when preparing her drinks. Behind her in second place was Tomek Marchwiński , who had previously won this particular competition back in 2009. Third place was occupied by experienced barista Kuba Gielżyński. Here is a complete list of the participants:
Ela Citak - Węgierska Korona (24.0 pts)
Tomek Marchwiński - Green Coffee (23.5 pts)
Kuba Gielżyński - i-coffee (23.0 pts)
Mateusz Gaca - Brisman
Basia Szparagowska - Colours of Coffee
Kamila Kreczmer - i-coffee
Agnieszka Rojewska - Brisman
As with every other year, the baristas began competing at the semi-finals stage of the championship. On Wednesday, 23 March, 14 contestants battled it out for a place in the final (on Friday 25 March). Each barista tried the very best with their presentation, as only the top six could take a place in the final. There were also one or two technical issues that helped delay the results, creating all the more nerves. At the end of the day, the judges' verdict gave final places to: Iza Popiołek, Katarzyna Zyzało, Leszek Jędrasik, Piotr Kaczorowski, Agnieszka Fleischer and Agniezka Rojewska.
By the third day, the emotion surrounding the championships had hit climax. The 6 remaining baristas, who had all progressed from the semi-finals held on the Wednesday, came together to battle it out to be Polish Barista champion and fpr the oppurtunity to represent Poland at the World Barista Championships in Bogotá, Colombia. The eventual winner of The Poland Barista Championship 2011 was found in Iza Popiołek, who has now claimed the title three years running. Not far behind was Katarzyna Zyzało; in third came Piotr Kaczorowski. Here is a full list of this years finalists and their final positions:
I = Iza Popiołek – Green coffee - 624.0 pts
II = Katarzyna Zyzało – North Coast - 574.0 pts
III = Piotr Kaczorowski – Coffeeheaven - 551.5 pts
Leszek Jędrasik – Ipanema café (finalist)
Agnieszka Fleischer – Coffeeheaven (finalist)
Agnieszka Rojewska – Brisman (finalist)
Agnieszka Dawidowska – Ipanema cafe
Ela Citak – Węgierska korona
Rafał Górka – Espresso service
Michał Knap Dam – Green coffee
Paweł Trzciński – Kofeinna
Joanna Szataniak Okaj – Coffee project
Bogusz Komisarczuk – The Barista
Błażej Stempin – Filtry Café
It was a close run battle. As Tom Obracaj later announced, they were all winners, but ultimately Iza Popiołek's experience, knowledge and ability proved enough to seal the deal (for the third time running !!!!!).
We would like to take this chance to sincerely congratulate all of the participants, especially our new champions, and wish them every success in the future! We also hope that you will all continue to support our champions as they prepare to take on the rest of the world.

Champions become trainers as the Polish Coffee Workshop offers education for all
The ExpoSweet trade fair in Warsaw was the venue for the SCAE Polish chapter's coffee workshop in late February, National Coordinator Konrad Oleksak reports.
Over three days, in a 100-square-metre area,12 instructors, six volunteers, two espresso machines, lots of different brewing devices and an even larger number of coffees came together, as we were sold only one thing: EDUCATION.
The event was purely about coffee education, both for the public and for those in the Polish coffee industry. The people that came to our stand had to make coffee themselves, and they were taught about coffee, how to brew it and taste it, using different methods. Some of the best people in Polish industry, along with Barista, Latte Art, Cup Tasting, and Coffee in Good Spirits Champions shared their skills and knowledge.
Our Team (in alphabetical order, with their subjects) were:
-
“Speciality coffee in Guatemala” by Filip Bartelak, an importer of green coffee from Guatemala, Q Grader, SCAA Certified Cupping Judge
-
“Home barista-different brewing methods” and “ Single origin coffees and filter coffee in gastronomy” by Łukasz Jura, Polish Barista Champion 2007, Latte Art Champion, Norway 2009, World Champion AeroPress 2009
-
“Coffee in Good Spirits--how to combine coffee with alcohol” and “Creativity in coffee--different beverages based on espresso” by Marcin Michalik, Polish Latte Art Champion 2010
-
"Latte Art techniques” by Marcin Moczydłowski, Polish Latte Art Champion 2008
-
“World coffee market” by Tomasz Obracaj, SCAE President 2004-2005 and SCAE Ambassador
-
"Polish coffee market” by Michael Ovadenko, Coffeeheaven founder and owner of The Barista Espresso Bar & Bakery
-
"Producing countries and their coffee characteristics” by Izabela Popiołek, Polish Barista Champion 2009, 2010
-
"Presentation of the SCAE trip to Panama and Costa Rica” by Marek Robacha, certified cup taster, national and WBC judge
-
"Cup Tasting--sensory evaluation” by Sławomir Saran, Polish Barista Champion 2008
- “Home barista--different brewing methods at home” by Błażej Stempin, Polish Cup Tasting Champion 2011
- "Coffee--cooperative farms in Africa” by Paweł Trzciński, Polish AeroPress Champion 2011
A BIG thank you to ALL !!!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank EZIG, organiser of the ExpoSweet trade fair, for making this event happen, and especially Janusz Profus, chocolate maestro, for all his support and strong coffee spirit.
