Norwegian SCAE members show strong presence in Cup of Excellence bidding

16th July 2008

Norwegian SCAE members made up one of the largest groups of successful bidders at the Honduras Cup of Excellence auction in early July, taking four of the top six winning coffees.

The first place coffee—15 bags of Pacas variety from Franklin Adonis Madrid’s El Sauce II farm in the country’s Santa Barbara region—was won with a $16.65 bid by Time’s Club, acting for C-Coop and Kyokuto Fadie Corp.

Second place Finca Moreno’s owner Pedro Moreno achieved a price of $15.35 a pound in the auction, for 13 bags of bourbon from the farm in the same region. Maruyama Coffee for the Mikatajuku Group shared the honours as bidders with Honey Coffee, Sugi Roasting Co and Orsir Coffee.

All of the remaining top six coffees in the auction were won by Norwegians, with past World Barista Champion Tim Wendelboe making the third highest bid ($14.00 a pound) for the programme’s fourth highest scoring coffee lot, 13 bags of catuaí from the Cielito Lindo farm owned by Extreberto Caceres Gutierrez.

The other top six coffees in the Cup of Excellence competition were won by Solberg & Hansen, which has bought coffees in every Cup of Excellence auction, A/S Pals, and Kaffebrenneriet.

Among the other SCAE members to successfully bid in the auction were Bewleys of Ireland, Mareterra of Spain and Russia’s SFT Trading.
