Het weekend van 15 – 16 mei vond in Utrecht de vakbeurs Beleef koffie| Beleef Thee plaats.
Tijdens deze tweede editie was er voor het eerst een veelvoud aan Nederlandse kampioenschappen met vier nieuwe Nederlandse koffiekampioenen,waar we trots op kunnen zijn.
Ook werd het nieuwe logo en de nieuwe naam gepresenteerd. Zoals voorzitter,
Jeroen Veldkamp het uitdrukte: “Vorig jaar tijdens het Dutch Barista Championship
hebben we, SCAE Nederland en Dutch Coffee Promotion, ons verloofd. Nu zijn we
getrouwd en gaan we verder onder één naam. SCAE Nederland zal er alles aan doen om nog veel mooie evenementen neer te zetten en Speciality Coffee verder te promoten.”
Tijdens de beurs hebben het Nederlands Kampioenschap Latte Art en het Dutch Cuptasters Championship in het theater plaatsgevonden onder grote publieke belangstelling.
Rond de 400 toeschouwers moedigden de deelnemers aan.
Het Slow Coffee en Aeropress Championship vonden plaats in de grote Brewbar, waar het publiek de deelnemers van nabij kon volgen en zo mee kon proeven van de koffie, die aan de jury werd gepresenteerd.
Een unicum was de coöperatie met België, waarmee samen het Slow Coffee Championship werd georganiseerd en waardoor uiteindelijk twee nationale kampioenen gekroond werden.
In Maastricht zullen voor Latte Art Esther Maasdam, voor Cuptasters Sander Reuderink en voor Brewers Cup Frans Taapken deelnemen.
Met Kiona Malinka voor Ibrik, Richard Zijlstra voor Coffee in Good Spirits and Yakup Aydin voor het WBC heeft Nederland voor het eerst een compleet team op de been om een kans te maken op de Nations Cup.
SCAE World of Coffee
In 2011 vindt SCAE World of Coffee voor het eerst in Nederland plaats.
Als SCAE Nederland zijn wij er bijzonder trots op de rest van de koffieminnende wereld in het mooie Maastricht te mogen ontvangen.
We hebben er alles aan gedaan om een geweldig “social program” te organiseren. De stad Maastricht biedt een receptie in het historische stadhuis aan op de dinsdag avond.
Na een dag van enerverende voorrondes is het woensdagavond tijd om even geestelijk tot rust komen en de dag te bespreken in de unieke Dominicaner Kerk. Hier vindt “Drinks in the Dominicaner” plaats, een happening, waarbij het bedrag van de entree geheel ten goede komt aan Coffee Kids. Je kunt relaxen, maar misschien gebeurt er ook nog van alles.
Dan donderdag. Om alles weer op scherp te zetten en misschien die tip te krijgen die je kampioen kunt maken, kun je de dag beginnen met het “Meet the Champions”Breakfast.
Midden in de stad op het Plein voor Coffee Lovers kun je ontbijten met ex-wereld kampioenen als James Hoffmann, Peter Hernou en Stephen Morrisey om maar een paar namen te noemen.
De afsluiter van dit geweldige event is de Barista Party, die alle eerdere party’s in het niet laat vallen. Natvia presenteert de Sweet Fantasy Party. Dit mag je gewoon niet missen.
Maastricht 2011 wordt een evenement om te herinneren.
Utrecht event completes the Dutch team competing for the World Championships and the Nations Cup
For the first time, multiple Dutch coffee championships took place during the second edition of the Experience Coffee/Experience Tea trade fair in Utrecht in mid-May, resulting in four new Dutch coffee champions of whom the Dutch chapter can be proud, National Coordinator Annemarie Tiemes reports.
At the same event, the chapter's new logo and name were also launched--or to put it into the words of chairman Jeroen Veldkamp: “During the Dutch Barista championship last year we, SCAE The Netherlands and Dutch Coffee Promotion, became engaged. This year we got married and will now go on further under one name. SCAE The Netherlands will try to organise many spectacular events and promote speciality coffee even more.”
The Dutch Latte Art and the Cup Tasters championships took place in the theatre during the trade fair and both were very well attended. The participants benefited from the stimulation of having around 400 spectators!
The Slow Coffee and Aeropress championships took place in the large brew bar, where the public could follow the participants closely and taste the coffee that was presented to the judges afterwards.
The collaboration with Belgium was unique during this edition. The two countries organised the Slow Coffee Championship together, so we could crown two champions this year.
In Maastricht later this month, Esther Maasdam will represent the Netherlands and participate in the World Latte Art championship, Sander Reuderink in the World Cup Tasters championship and Frans Taapken in the new Brewers Cup championship.
With Kiona Malinka for Cezve/Ibrik, Richard Zijlstra for Coffee in Good Spirits and Yakup Aydin for the WBC, we now have a complete team, and for the first time in history we have a chance to go for the Nations Cup!
World of Coffee's wonderful Social Programme
SCAE World of Coffee takes place in the Netherlands in 2011 for the first time, and
SCAE The Netherlands is very proud to welcome the rest of the coffee-loving world to the beautiful city of Maastricht, reports National Coordinator Annemarie Tiemes.
We have created a fantastic Social Programme. To start with, on Tuesday evening, the city of Maastricht will host a reception in the historic town hall.
After a day of exciting pre-selections, it is time to relax and discuss the day. This is possible on Wednesday evening in the unique Dominicaner church. Drinks in the Dominicaner will take place during an event where the total proceeds go to Coffee Kids. During this event you can relax, but who knows what will happen later on…
On Thursday, you can start the day with the Meet the Champions Breakfast. This will clear your mind--and maybe you will even receive the tip that will make you the champion in the end! In the city centre, at the square in front of Coffee Lovers, you will enjoy breakfast with former world champions like James Hoffmann, Peter Hernou and Stephen Morrisey, to name just a few.
The closing of this fantastic event is the Barista Party, which is the queen of all parties during World of Coffee. Natvia presents The Sweet Fantasy Party. Don’t miss this!

Yakup Aydin wint Dutch Barista Championship 2010 en kwalificeert zich voor Colombia
Yakup Aydin, al vaak tweede maar nog nooit eerste geworden, liet volgens de jury een perfecte performance zien terwijl zowel zijn espresso, cappuccino als zijn signature drink van een ongekend hoog niveau was. Sander Schat werd tweede, Coen van Sprang veroverde de derde plaats en won de Louis Claus-bokaal.
De wedstrijd vond plaats in Hotel de Goudfazant, een trendy restaurant annex eventlocatie aan het IJ in Amsterdam.
Yakup Aydin, in het dagelijks leven werkzaam bij Illy Coffee, verdedigt Nederland in 2011 in koffiebakermat Colombia. Zijn enthousiasme was ook de jury opgevallen, getuige de woorden van jurylid (en nationaal coördinator van de Specialty Coffee Association Europe) Annemarie Tiemes: ‘Zijn presentatie bruiste van passie en enthousiasme. Bovendien waren de smaken van zijn dranken bovengemiddeld goed.’ Jurylid Patrick Groenewold sloot zich daarbij aan: ‘Echt een overtuigende barista, de terechte winnaar!’ Liesbeth Sleijster, sensorisch jurylid tijdens de wedstrijd en in 2008 derde tijdens het World Barista Championship: ‘Hij was buiten twijfel de beste. Zijn smaakbeschrijving paste perfect bij zijn koffie en de smaak was super. Ik wens hem al het beste toe voor het WK!’
Ook voor de als tweede geëindigde Sander Schat had de jury lovende woorden: ‘Hij heeft allang bewezen dat hij tot de top behoort’, stelde Liesbeth Sleijster vast. Annemarie Tiemes voegde daar nog aan toe dat Schat een gedegen presentatie had neergezet. De derde plaats was dit jaar voor Coen van Sprang. Jurylid Patrick Groenewold: ‘Een hele mooie presentatie en veel oog voor detail; prachtig!’ Sleijster was ook onder de indruk: ‘Coen is bereid tot het gaatje te gaan en dat kunnen we in Nederland heel goed gebruiken. Complimenten!’
Coen van Sprang won, naast zijn de derde plaats, ook de Louis Claus-bokaal. Deze bokaal werd dit jaar voor het eerst uitgereikt en geldt als aanmoedigingsprijs voor de beste nieuwkomer in het vakgebied. De prijs is vernoemd naar Louis Claus, eigenaar van café De Blonde Pater in Nijmegen en initiatiefnemer van vele activiteiten die de Nederlandse koffiebeleving in de afgelopen jaren naar een hoger niveau hebben getild SCAE Nederland en Dutch Coffee Promotion bundelen krachten.
Tijdens het Dutch Barista Championship 2010 hebben Annemarie Tiemes (Nationaal Coördinator SCAE Nederland) en Jeroen Veldkamp (voorzitter Dutch Coffee Promotion) hun handtekening gezet onder een samenwerkingsovereenkomst tussen SCAE Nederland en Dutch Coffee Promotion.
De nieuwe stichting zal het enthousiasme, de kennis en infrastructuur van Dutch Coffee Promotion combineren met de (internationale) ervaring, expertise en passie van de SCAE. Wij kijken uit naar een positieve toekomst!
Speciale dank gaat uit naar al onze vrijwilligers, MC Jeroen Veldkamp (die niet is bedankt op de dag zelf, maar alles weer super aan elkaar heeft gepraat), juryleden, deelnemers, bestuur van DCP en natuurlijk het 350 koppen tellende publiek, dat samen met ons heeft genoten van deze fantastische dag.
Yakup Aydin wins Dutch Barista Championship 2010 and is the first to qualify for the WBC in Colombia
Yakup Aydin, who in past years has been a runner-up, but never a winner of the Dutch Barista Championship, in late May won the top prize by showing the judges an almost perfect performance with an espresso, cappuccino and signature drink of very high quality, Dutch National Coordinator Annemarie Tiemes reports.

Yakup Aydin, who works for for Illy Coffee, will be competing for the Netherlands at the WBC in Colombia in 2011.
This year’s Championship took place in Amsterdam, in the trendy restaurant/event venue Hotel de Goudfazant. The judges for these finals were Nicole de Zeeuw and Bart Deprez for technical, Leigh McDonald, Liesbeth Sleijster, Annemarie Tiemes and Patrick Groenewold as sensory judges, and Michael McCauley as head judge.
Liesbeth Sleijster, who in 2008 came in third at the WBC, said about Yakup Aydin’s performance: ”He was without a doubt the best. His taste references were perfect for his coffees, and I wish him all the best for the World Championships.” Annemarie Tiemes said: “Yakup’s presentation was full of enthusiasm and passion. The taste of the beverages was extraordinary." Patrick Groenewold called Yakup "a passionate barista and a deserving Champion."
Coen van Sprang, who came in third in the Championship, won the Louis Claus Trophy, being given for the first time, and presented to the most promising newcomer in the Barista Championship. It is named after Louis Claus, owner of the café “de Blonde Pater”, the creator of a lot of coffee-related activities, and the trainer of many Dutch champions and finalists.
The finals started with an official moment, announcing the merger between SCAE Netherlands and Dutch Coffee Promotion, and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by Annemarie Tiemes and Jeroen Veldkamp (chairman of Dutch Coffee Promotion). The new merged organisation will combine the enthusiasm, knowledge and infrastructure of DCP with the (international) experience, expertise and passion of the SCAE. We are looking forward to a positive future.
