WERELDFINALES SCAE IN KOPENHAGEN 2008
Van 19 juni tot en met 22 juni vonden in Kopenhagen, Denemarken de wereldfinales van de SCAE (speciality coffee association of Europe) plaats. Tijdens deze 4 dagen kregen meer dan 120 deelnemers van over de hele wereld de kans om zichzelf te bewijzen als ware meesters in het espressozetten, de LatteArt, cuptasting… verdeeld over verschillende kampioenschappen. In een warme, goedlachse sfeer probeerden de kandidaten de internationale jury te imponeren met geurige aroma’s, verbluffende prestaties, kleurrijke presentaties en perfecte afwerkingen.
De Belgen waren dit jaar goed vertegenwoordigd. Voor de eerste keren waren we met een serieus team aanwezig en dit dankzij de Belgische sponsors: Java, Lavazza, Rombouts, Caffé Kimbo, Schuilenburg, Portion Pack, Lion Products, Routin, Efico en Hans Onan. Ook bij de organisatie kon men rekenen op de toegewijde medewerking van de Belgen. Jeanne Gennar, nationaal coördinator SCAE België, was voor deze gelegenheid Baristamama. Zij begeleidde de verschillende deelnemers in hun voorbereidingstijd. Manu Demets, de wedstrijdorganisator van SCAE België, leidde de wedstrijden als MC of presentator bij de World LatteArt Championship en World Coffee-in-Good-Spirits Championship. Hij zorgde voor een onvergetelijke ambiance en dat de teamspirit van elk land tot zijn recht kwam.
Voor de World Barista Championship haalde de Belg Detlev Battiau van Detlev’s Barista Service, de 19de plaats van de 51 deelnemers. België nam voor de derde maal deel aan de World Barista. Elk jaar wordt het niveau van de kandidaten hoger en moet er harder geknokt worden voor die eerste plaats.
Bart Van Sanden van Efico, belandde precies in het midden met de World Cuptasting Championship. De 15de plaats. Een knap staaltje van proeven in een onvoorstelbaar spannende wedstrijd.
De Belgische deelnemer voor World LatteArt Championship, Peter Hernou, , individeel trainer voor LatteArt,had pech. Hij verloor grip op het melkkannetje waardoor hij in ‘overtime’ ging. Toch zette hij zijn voorstelling op een professionele manier verder en eindigde op de 20ste plaats van de 25 deelnemers.
We hadden geen deelnemer voor de World Coffee-in-Good-Spirits en zo konden we niet meedingen naar de prijs voor ‘the best nation’.
Nieuw dit jaar was de World Ibrik Championship, het Turkse ritueel van koffiemaken. De Belg Patrick Hanssens van Grootmoeders Koffie, gaf een schitterende voorstelling met zijn vrouw Vinciane. Ze scoorde de 6de plaats van de 12 deelnemers, dat leverde hen een trofee op.
België kon echter nog met een trofee naar huis gaan. Bij het uitreiken van de SCAE Awards, kreeg Efico de trofee voor The Innovation and Design Award, die trots in ontvangst werd genomen door afgevaardigd bestuurder Michel Germanes.

Between the 19th and the 22nd June, the SCAE World Championships took place in Copenhagen, Denmark. During those four days more than 120 competitors got the chance to prove themselves as real masters of Espresso, Latte Art, Cup Tasting and other skills in the different competitions. The atmosphere was very friendly and warm. The participants tried to impress the international jury with their fine aromas and their amazing skills in producing colourful presentations and perfect end results.
Belgium, for the first time, had a very strong team. This came about with help from our sponsors: Java, Lavazza, Rombouts, Caffé Kimbo, Schuilenburg, Lion Products, Portion Pack, Routin, Efico and Hans Onan.
Also helping with the organisation of the World Championships was the Belgian National Coördinator, Jeanne Gennar, a real “Barista Mama.” She guided the competitors on stage.
Manu Demets, organiser of the Belgian SCAE Championships, was MC. He did a fantastic job with the timing and he helped the audience enjoy the great ambiance. He also brought the team spirit of every country very much to life.
In the World Barista Championship, the Belgian Detlev Battiau, from Detlev’s Barista Service, came 19th out of the 51 competitors. Every year the level of the competitors grows stronger. It is a real struggle to get to first place.
Belgian competitor Peter Hernou, independent Latte Art trainer, had bad luck. He lost grip on his milk jug, and so went ‘overtime’. But he continued in a very professional way, and ended up 20th out of the 25 participants.
In the World Coffee in Good Spirits, we unfortunately had no competitor—so we couldn’t go for the Best Nation award.
For the World Cup Tasting Championship, Bart Van Sanden from Efico did a really good job. He came 15th out of 30 competitors—right in the middle of this very exciting competition.
New this year was the World Ibrik Championship. Patrick Hanssens and his wife Vinciane , from Grandmothers Coffee, gave a marvelous show and won the trophy for the 6th place. There were 12 competitors.
Patrick was the only competitor who was not familiar to the Turkish way of making coffee.
Belgium won another trophy as well. During the SCAE Awards for Coffee Excellence party, Michel Germanes, delegate Director of Efico, with much pride accepted the Innovation & Design Award.
