SCAE(Specialty Coffee Assoication of Europe) Belgium ez vzw Belgian Coffee Education bestaat uit twee harten die als een hart kloppen. Het ene kan niet zonder het andere.

2de  editie “DE GOUDEN PORTAFILTER”

Op 19 oktober organiseerde SCAE (Speciality Coffee Association of Europe) Belgium en de vzw Belgian Coffee Education voor de 2de maal het koffie evenement “De Gouden Portafilter”.

Het feestelijke gebeuren vond plaats in San Marco Village te Aartselaar en werd gepresenteerd door Gene Bervoets.  4 disciplines in de koffie zorgden weer voor veel ambiance en spanning.

De 6de editie van Belgisch kampioenschap BARISTA werd gewonnen door de Limburgse Kathleen Serdons, leerkracht Hotelschool Hasselt. Het was niet de eerste keer dat Kathleen deelnam, maar wel de eerste keer dat ze won. Gesteund door koffie Rombouts behaalde ze met veel trots de eerste plaats. Kathleen begint binnen enkele weken opnieuw te trainen voor de WBC (World Barista Championship) die in 2011 zal plaats vinden in Colombia. Op de tweede plaats kwam Isabelle Verschraegen van Caffénation. Een ware concurrent voor Kathleen. Louis Donck van Donko’s koffie behaalde de derde plaats. Beste espresso ging naar Kathleen Serdons, alsook de beste signature drink. Beste cappuccino was voor Louis.

De 5de editie van het Belgisch kampioenschap CUPTASTING  werd gewonnen door Roel Driesen van Java koffie, ook een Limburger. Het koffieslurpen ging Roel heel goed af. Spannende eindronde met waardige tegenstanders. De tweede plaats werd behaald door Bart Van Sanden van Efico, in 2009 tweede beste cupper in de wereldfinale. Derde plaats werd verdiend door Tom Janssen van Koffiebranderij Or. Roel zal onze “cupper” zijn in de wereldfinale Cuptasting in Maastricht tijdens de SCAE wereldfinales in juni 2011.

In de 4de editie LATTEART was de finale superspannend. Een echte strijd tussen man en vrouw, Dorien Jansen en Jef Gladines. Dorien versloeg haar man met 1 punt. Ze hebben in Turnhout een mooie zaak “Aroma”. CoffeeRoots brandde hun koffie. FrieslandCampina zorgde voor ondersteuning met Nutroma Opschuimmelk. Dorien zal ons land vertegenwoordigen op de wereldfinale SCAE in Maastricht, juni 2011. De tweede plaats ging dus naar Jef Gladines en de derde plaats was voor Damien Sasson van Cafés Knopes.

 COFFEE IN GOOD SPIRITS in haar 3de editie werd gewonnen door, alweer een Limburger, Gérard Meylaerts. De trotse Gérard, gesteund door Coffeeprofs, liet voor deze gelegenheid zijn koffie branden bij CoffeeRoots. Hij zal ons land vertegenwoordigen in Nederlands Limburg, Maastricht tijdens de wereldkampioenschappen van SCAE. De tweede plaats ging naar Ronny Billemon van Everpure en de derde plaats werd behaald door Kathleen Serdons.
 
Naast de succesvolle wedstrijden werd ook dit jaar weer een reeks professionele workshops georganiseerd. Onder leiding van Ingrid Bogaert, Schuilenburg hebben verschillende van onze sponsors een ander aspect van koffie toegelicht.

In mid-October, SCAE Belgium and Belgian Coffee Education organised the second edition of their successful coffee event The Golden Portafilter, Belgian National Coordinator Jeanne Gennar reports.

The beautiful location of San Marco Village gave the event an extra touch. Gene Bervoets was the MC for the four SCAE coffee competitions, and there was a lot of atmosphere and tension in the big hall.
 
Kathleen Serdons won the 6th edition of the Belgian Barista Championship. She is a teacher an the catering and hotel management school in Hasselt. This was not her first time competing, but it was the first time she actually won! Supported by Koffie Rombouts, she became proudly the number one Barista in Belgium, and  she will now start training for the WBC in Colombia next year. Second place in the Barista Championship went to Isabelle van Verschraegen of Caffénation, while in third place was Louis Donck of Donko’s Koffie.

The 5th edition of the Belgian Cup Tasting Championship was won by Roel Driesen of Java Koffie. Second place in the Championship went to Bart van Sande from Efico, who in 2009 was the second best cupper in the world. In third place was Tom Janssen of Koffiebranderij Or. Roel wil represent our country during the World Cup Tasters Championships in Maastricht next June.

The 4th edition of Belgian Latte Art Championship was extremely exciting, because it was a real competition between hushband and wife: Dorien Jansen beat her hushband Jef Gladines, as the couple came first and second. Dorien and Jef run the Aroma coffee house, and CoffeeRoots roasted their coffee, while dairy supplier FrieslandCampina supported them with its Nutroma Opschuimmelk. Dorien will respresent Belgium in Maastricht at the World Latte Art Championships in June 2011. Third place in the Belgian championship went to Damien Sosson from Cafés Knopes.

Gérard Meylaers was the winner of the 3rd edition of the Belgian Coffee in Good Spirits Championship. Supported by CoffeeProfs, Gérard unexpectedly but proudly won the Championship. CoffeeRoots roasted Gérard's coffee, and helped make the competition a success. Second place went to Ronny Billemon from Everpure, while Kathleen Serdons took third place.

Beside the big success of the competitions, again this year we had some well organised workshops. Ingrid Bogaert from Schuilenburg created a professional area together with some of our sponsors, and the subjects covered all the different aspects of coffee.

All of the activities of this year's Golden Portafilter were possible because of the sponsors of Belgian Coffee Education--so many thanks to all of them!

WERELDKAMPIOENSCHAPPEN IN KOFFIE

De Belgen hebben weer een wereldkampioen bij.  SCAE (Speciality Coffee Association of Europe) organiseerde in London de World Championships Latte Art, Coffee in Good Spirits, Cup Tasting en Ibrik. WBC organiseerde op hetzelfde tijdstip en plek de World Barista Championship.
 
Op 24 juni 2010 behaalde Jeroen De Corte de titel World Champion in Coffee in Good Spirits.

Jeroen is afkomstig uit Lommel en woont intussen met zijn gezin in Munsterbilzen. Een rasechte Limburgse bartender kreeg de smaak van koffie te pakken.  Jeroen werkt als bartender in jazzcafé “De Hopper” in Antwerpen en heeft ook zijn eigen bedrijf, “La Cocteleria”, www.lacocteleria.be. Hij weet ontzettend veel van “Spirits”, het bereiden van wereldberoemde cocktails en hij creëert zijn eigen cocktails. Vorig jaar kreeg hij interesse in onze wedstrijd Coffee in Good Spirits waar je twee perfecte Irish Coffees moet maken en twee eigen creaties met koffie als basiselement en alcohol. Op 1 oktober 2009 werd hij Belgisch kampioen Coffee in Good Spirits en vertegenwoordigde ons land in London tijdens de wereldfinales. Met veel trots meldt SCAE België en vzw Belgian Coffee Education dat we opnieuw een wereldkampioen hebben.  Jeroen heeft keihard gewerkt, getraind en afgezien. Hij zal dit jaar onze “KOFFIE AMBASSADEUR” zijn. Belangrijk om te vermelden is dat Jeroen’s coach niemand minder was, dan onze vorige wereldkampioen in LatteArt, namelijk Peter Hernou. Peter en zijn vrouw Petra hebben Jeroen het vuur aan de schenen gelegd. Hun kritische ingesteldheid, het trainen op superdetails hebben mee gezorgd voor de prestatie van Jeroen. Nog belangrijk om te vermelden is dat één van onze sponsors, CoffeeRoots, net als vorig jaar bij Peter Hernou,  de koffie gebrand heeft en mee gezocht hebben naar de juiste koffie, hun labo ter beschikking hebben gesteld, voorzien van het wedstrijd espressomachine van Dallacorte, molen en andere benodigdheden. Kenny Burssens, Belgisch kampioen Barista, nam deel aan de World Barista Championship. Kenny is samen met zijn vrouw Wendy, eigenaar van het restaurant Invinsible te Antwerpen. Hij behaalde de 30ste plaats. In totaal waren er 60 landen die deelnamen. Kenny had zijn eigen originele presentatie gebracht vanuit zijn gastronomische achtergrond.  Coach was Manu Demets van Rombouts Koffie.
 
In de World Latte Art Championship werden we vertegenwoordigd door onze Belgische Kampioen LatteArt, François Knopes van Cafés Knopes. François werd begeleid door zijn familie en vriendin Anaïs.  Hij behaalde de 11de plaats op een totaal van 32 deelnemers.

Voor de World Cup Tasters Championship werden we vertegenwoordigd door Bert Van Wassenhove van Caffénation. De zenuwen hebben Bert overmand en hij viel uit in de eerste ronde. Hij werd bekroond met de titel van best “Fashioned”.

In World Cezve/Ibrik Championship nam Roeland Lenaerts samen met Isabelle Verschraegen van Caffénation deel. Ze behaalde de 7de plaats tussen de 14 andere deelnemers.  Roeland had getraind met een gastoestel voor het maken van de Ibrik, Turkse koffie. Omwille van veiligheidsredenen werden de gastoestellen niet toegelaten en was het voor Roeland een enorme overschakeling naar het verwarmen van de koffie in zand.

Nog niet opgenomen in het wedstrijdprogramma van SCAE, maar wel eerste AEROPRESS competition, werd voor België vertegenwoordigd door Jef Verellen van Caffénation. Jef behaalde de 3de plaats tussen 22 andere deelnemers.
 
Het is al weer bewezen dat België een koffieland is met veel getalenteerde koffiefreaks.

Belgium once again has a World Champion!

The SCAE organised the World Championships in Latte Art, Coffee in Good Spirits, Cup Tasting and Ibrik and the WBC (World Barista Championship) was held at the same time, in London.
 
On 24 June, JEROEN DE CORTE won the title of World Champion of Coffee in Good Spirits.
 
Jeroen comes from Lommel, part of Limburg, and he now lives with his family in Munsterbilzen. He is a real Limburger bartender who got caught by the taste of coffee. Jeroen works as a bartender in the trendy jazzcafé “De Hopper” in Antwerp and has his own business ”La Cocteleria”, www.lacocteleria.be, a catering cocktail bar. He knows an amazing amount about spirits, about how to prepare world famous cocktails and he even creates his own cocktails.

Last year, he became interested in our SCAE Coffee in Good Spirits Championship. In this competition, you have to prepare two perfect Irish Coffees and two signature drinks of your own, using coffee as a base and alcohol. On 1 October 2009, he became the Belgian national champion in Coffee in Good Spirits and he represented our country in London for the World Championships 2010.

With much pride, SCAE Belgium and the association Belgian Coffee Education announce this new World Champion. Jeroen trained and worked very hard and will be our  “Coffee Ambassador”. It is also important that Jeroen was coached by our World Champion in Latte Art from last year, Peter Hernou. Peter and his wife Petra made it very difficult for Jeroen, training him on every little detail, and this surely was a part of his success. Also important was the coffee that was used, again roasted by one of our sponsors CoffeeRoots, who also roasted the coffee last year for Peter Hernou. They helped by looking for the right coffee, choosing the right roast, and they supported with machines, a training room, and materials. You can reach Jeroen on his mobile phone: +32 475 409999.

Kenny Burssens, Belgian national champion barista, took part in the World Barista Championship 2010. Kenny, together with his wife Wendy, owns a great restaurant, “Invinsible” in Antwerp. Kenny came 30th among 54 countries. He had a very original presentation based on his gastronomic background. His coach was Manu Demets from Coffee Rombouts. Rombouts supported Kenny with coffee, machines and training.

 
In the World Latte Art Championship, François Knopes from Café Knopes represented our country. François had support from the family roastery Knopes, and from his girlfriend Anaïs. He got to 11th place, among  32 competitors.

For the World Cup Tasters Championship, our national champion Bert Van Wassenhove from Caffenation competed. Nerves overwhelmed our mascot Bert, and he had to stop in the first round, but he got the title of “fashion king”.

In the World Cezve/Ibrik Championship, we were represented by Roeland Lenaerts and Isabelle Verschraegen from Caffenation. They landed right in the middle at 7th place. Roeland had trained with gas and just before the competion he knew that the fair didn’t allowed any gas for security reasons. He had to change his preparation on stage and that brought some stress. But his performance was really cool and concentrated.

 
Not yet an official part of the SCAE, but already a big success was the Aeropress Competition. For Belgium, Jef Verellen from Caffenation competed and took 3rd place among 22 other competitors.
 
Again, Belgium proved to be a true coffee country, with a lot of talented coffee freaks!

The Golden Portafilter event attracts 500 to four exciting coffee competitions

On October 1, for the first time, we held all our Belgian SCAE Competitions together in one day, presented during a big event, in the beautiful San Marco Village in Schelle.

We gave our coffee event the name "The Golden Portafilter," and we invited more than 500 to this well organised show, a show that could grow into the "place to be" for everyone who wants to bring quality coffee to consumers.

The Belgian Chapter of the SCAE and the non-profit association Belgian Coffee Education were responsible for the organisation of the four competitions: Cup Tasting, Barista, Latte Art and Coffee in Good Spirits. Ten highly qualified international judges were there, both to judge and support the competitors.

After a very exciting semi-final round, presented by the professional MCs Ronny Mocuse and Manu Demets, we found three finalists, and we were able to start the competitions.

In the Cup Tasting Competition, brewmaster Keith Collins from Bunn-o-matic UK, together with his wife and Patrick Versluys from Limarc Belgium, prepared eight sets of three cups of coffee for each of the 12 competitors -- that's a lot of quality coffee to prepare. The green coffee came from Efico and CoffeeRoots, and was roasted by SAS Koffie and Ulric De Moor. (Under the rules of the competition, every set of cups has two identical coffees and one "odd" cup. The competitor has to find the "odd" cup. The one with the most correct cups and the best time is the winner.)

The Competition was very exciting this year. Bart Van Sanden (from Efico) had already become the second best cupper in the World at the World Championship in Cologne in June. He, together with Bart Decraene (of Delhaize) and Bert Van Wassenhove (of Caffenation in Antwerp) fought each other for the title this time, and all three had seven correct cups in the final. Bert Van Wassenhove finally won, because he was the fastest, with a time of one minute and 13 seconds. Bart Van Sanden had a time of two minutes, 46 seconds, to come in second place, and Bart Decraene took third place with a time of three minutes and 20 seconds.

Then the VIP evening started with three finalists in each of the three remaining competitions. The evening's MCs were Gène Bervoets and our own World Latte Art Champion Peter Hernou.

The mission during the Coffee in Good Spirits Competition is to make two identical Irish Coffees and two identical signature drinks, cold or warm, and, of course, using alcohol. The competitors have to complete their presentation in just eight minutes.

We now have a surprising new winner, Jeroen De Corte, bartender at the jazz café Hopper in Antwerp, who also runs his own cocktail and catering business Frozen Vanilla. (For the competition, he was working with coffee from CoffeeRoots.) Last year's competition winner, Ronny Billemon (who placed eighth at the World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship in Cologne in June), came second.

For the Latte Art Competition, the competitors had to prepare, in eight minutes, two identical cappuccinos, two identical espresso macchiatos and two identical signature drinks, all while making beautiful patterns with the foamed milk.

The Gold prize went to François Knopes, of Cafés Knopes, a roastery in the province Luxemburg, and he is the young but experienced barista who will represent us in London in 2010 at the World Latte Art Championships. The Silver prize went to Stéphane Dierinckx from Café Liegeois, and Joël Morabito from the coffee bar Natural Caffé in Brussels won the Bronze prize.

In the Barista competition, the three finalists had to present four identical espressos, four identical cappuccinos and four identical signature drinks (without alcohol) in 15 minutes. The judges were looking for technical skills, hospitality skills, creativity in taste and presentation.

The Gold prize went to Kenny Burssens from the Magma restaurant in Antwerp, who already had experience with competitions as a sommelier, but was a surprise winner as he was a new barista in our competitions. Kenny worked with coffee from Koffie Rombouts, (and Rombouts also worked together with CoffeeRoots to create a special blend, for use as a "competition coffee"). Kenny also won the prize of best espresso.

Last year's winner, Melanie Nunes, won the Silver prize. She was 27th on the World Barista Championship, and was one of the world's five best of the female baristas. She worked with Viva Sara's coffee. Melanie works in a coffee & cake bar called Barista in Gent. Melanie also won the prize of the best signature drink.

François Knopes of Cafés Knopes came third in the Belgian Barista Championship to take the Bronze prize -- and he also won the prize for the best cappuccino. Already the winner of the Belgian Latte Art Championship, he of course worked with his own Cafés Knopes coffee.

All the winners, who will represent Belgium at the World Championships next June in London, received beautiful trophies and prizes from the sponsors of Belgian Coffee Education.

We closed the evening with Pauline Sherwood who gave us Belgians a certificate for being "the 3rd best coffee nation in the World 2009". We won this in Cologne, thanks to the great results of our competitors.

We thank our head judges: John Sherwood (Barista), Jon Willassen (Cup Tasting), Paul-Meikle Janney (Latte Art and Coffee in Good Spirits), our technical judges, Marc-Pierre Dietrich, Kenneth Cooper, Paul-Meikle Janney (for the Barista competition), our sensory judges Pauline Sherwood, Pawel Maliszewski, Nils Boëse, Patrick Sebening, Jon Willassen (for Barista competition) and Michael McCauley.

We thank our sponsors and our day sponsors who made the Golden Portafilter day possible and who made it a huge success, with the competitions, the "from bean to cup" demonstration, the show, the buffet dinner, and the atmosphere of being one big coffee family.

We thank our "Baristamama," Annemarie Tiemes and stage manager Bart Deprez, the runners from Hotelschool Hasselt, and the helpers for the cup tasting Hans Onan, Chloé Van Bael, Petra Vissers and Roy Van Bellghem.

As Jon Willassen told us in his poem about being a barista, every little detail is important, and every person within the organisation is important. It's all about being one team, and that brings all the success we have. So, let's stick together!

SCAE Belgium and the association Belgian Coffee Education are proud to present our new high class coffee event taking place on the 1st of October 2009. All coffee lovers and coffee companies will be there to enjoy the different SCAE competitions and, of course, good food, drinks, dancers and wonderful music.

This year we have chosen to bring all our competitions together in an amusing atmosphere. Bringing the serious championships together in the spotlight gives a message to the world that coffee is fun, coffee is a passion, and that we all work for a better coffee world and for speciality coffee. We want to get the attention of a big audience, and direct that attention onto quality and onto how to provide quality in an attractive way.

We will hold the semi-final of SCAE Belgium's Barista Championship in the morning, starting at 9:30, with a respected team of international judges. For the Barista Championship, we have John Sherwood as the head judge, Marek Robacha , Marc-Pierre Dietrich and Paul Meikle-Janney as technical judges. The sensory judges will be Pauline Sherwood, Jon Willassen, Michael McCauley, Kenneth Cooper, Patrick Sebening and Nils Boese.

We have nine competitors, and only three of them will go to the finals in the evening. The announcement of the three finalists will take place around 15:00.

Our SCAE Belgian Cup Tasting Championships, with 11 competitors and the head judge Jon Willassen, will start at 16:00.

At that time our VIP room will open.

We start the finals of the SCAE Belgian Barista, Latte Art and Coffee in Good Spirits Championships at 18:00. (Paul Meikle-Janney will be head judge for Latte Art and Coffee in Good Spirits). By 22:00, we will know who are the national champs who will represent us during the SCAE World Championships in London, in June, 2010.

After 22:00, we will have a party for relaxation and enjoyment. A group of Cuban dancers will present a great Salsa show, and you will even be able to learn how to dance the Salsa. Afterwards, the dance floor will be all yours.

BELGIE 3de beste koffienatie in de wereld! Met een wereldkampioen Latte Art en veel ereplaatsen!

Het is een bijzonder grote eer voor mij om te kunnen zeggen dat we België op de koffiekaart hebben gebracht.

De start van onze kampioenschappen en Belgische SCAE-chapter werd gemaakt door Manu Demets en Alain Vandewaeter in 2005. Zij lieten hun oog vallen op mij om dit verder uit te werken en uit te bouwen. In 2006 zijn we een officiële chapter en amper drie jaar later hebben we een wereldkampioen.


Met veel trots kan ik zeggen dat Peter Hernou de welverdiende titel kreeg wereldkampioen LATTE ART 2009 van de SCAE World Latte Art Championships in Keulen op vrijdag 26 juni 2009.

Als we Peter voor het eerst ontmoetten in zijn horecazaak in Antwerpen zei hij: ik wil België op de kaart krijgen, op de koffiekaart. Wij overtuigden hem om deel te nemen aan de nationale kampioenschappen SCAE Latte Art. Hij is driemaal Belgisch Kampioen en werkt samen met zijn vrouw Petra als onafhankelijk koffieconsulent en trainer in verschillende disciplines van de koffie, met als specialiteit Latte Art. Het woord zegt het zelf “kunst met melk” met als basis een perfecte espresso. Peter en Periklis Karavas van Griekenland behaalden een gelijke puntenscore in de finale, wat zorgde voor een enorme spanning. De internationale jury moest zich buigen over de punten in detail: waar lag het verschil?

Peter heeft met glans en glorie gewonnen door smaak en creativiteit, de smaak van de koffie scoorde zo hoog dat iedereen hen vroeg van waar die koffie dan wel kwam.. Juryleden wilden weten welke “blend” gebruikt werd: deze blend werd gebrand en samengesteld door de broers Hoorens van Coffee Roots. Deze uitzonderlijk lekkere koffieblend in combinatie met de fantastische cappuccinomelk van FrieslandCampina zorgde voor dit wonderlijk resultaat. Natuurlijk gemaakt met de professionele machines van Dalla Corte en Malhkönig (in België ter beschikking gesteld door de firma Schuilenburg) en het allerbelangrijkste: Peter’s ongelofelijke concentratie, beheersing en creativiteit in de tekening van de signature drink “de vis”.

Deze titel opent nieuwe mogelijkheden voor het Belgische koffielandschap: een return voor onze leden, in het bijzonder de sponsors van de vzw Belgian Coffee Education. Onze oprechte dank aan allen die ons in Keulen gesteund hebben: het Belgisch Koffieverbond, vertegenwoordigd door de sympathieke Belgian Coffee Lady Petty Desloovere en sponsors Water+More, Schuilenburg, Viva Sara, Durobor, Coffee Roots en AVG- Elpo Cuisinex stonden enthousiast mee te roepen om Peter te ondersteunen.
Dit jaar was er eveneens een team voor het jury programma aanwezig: drie Belgen stonden in de World championships Latte Art en Coffee in Good Spirits (Bart Deprez, Michel Hoorens en Stefaan Behaege). Ze hebben dit schitterend gedaan.

Niet te vergeten, Manu Demets (Rombouts) entertainde en stuurde de World Championships Latte Art en Coffee in Good Spirits op een aangename en professionele manier.

Voor de World Championships Cuptasting behaalde we de 2de plaats. Bart Van Sanden van Efico (green coffee) vertegenwoordigde ons land in het “koffie proeven”, een wedstrijd die veel ervaring in het proeven van koffie vraagt. De smaakpapillen moeten goed getraind en afgestemd worden vooraleer zo’n uiterst spannende wedstrijd begint. Een cuppingspoon of proeflepel is het heiligdom van de cupper. Efico heeft de eer behaald de 2de beste cupper ter wereld in huis te hebben. De Russische dame Valentina Kazachkova maakte de wedstrijd bijzonder spannend samen met Bart Van Sanden. Bart had een beter tijd en had een score van 7 op 8. Valentina had meer tijd nodig maar miste geen enkele set.



Voor World Championship Czeve/Ibrik werd voor België de 4de plaats behaald door Violeta Leci, vergezeld door haar dochter Denisa. De mooie, sympathieke dames, afkomstig uit Albanië wonen al veel jaren in België en brachten hun traditie van koffie drinken en maken mee naar België. Het maken van een Turkse koffie is de oudste manier om koffie te zetten. Het is een overdragen van een oude cultuur, tijd maken voor koffie en het gezelschap.

In de World Championships voor Coffee in Good Spirits behaalde Ronny Billemon de 8ste plaats. Het was de eerste keer dat België deelnam aan deze discipline waar koffie met alcohol wordt gecombineerd. Ronny had de zenuwen goed onder controle en dat bracht hem ook op deze prachtige plaats.

Eerder dit jaar behaalde Melanie Nunens de 27ste plaats in de World Barista championships. Ze behoorde tot de 5 beste vrouwelijke baristi van de wereld. Barista is als het ware de Formule 1 in het bereiden van een perfecte espresso.

Al deze wedstrijden bracht ons op de 3de plaats als beste “Coffee Nation” van de wereld. Als team wordt België gezien als het beste Koffie-TEAM van de wereld.

Enthousiaste Belgische supporters in het publiek zorgden voor nog meer verbondenheid en sfeer.

Maar het is nog niet gedaan. Elk jaar gebeuren er nominaties door SCAE-leden aan mensen met uitzonderlijke verdiensten in de koffie. Ook hier behaalde België een trofee. Rob Berghmans van espressobar Caffé Nation in Antwerpen kreeg een “Award for Hidden Treasures”.

In alle bescheidenheid, maar met ontzettend veel trots, kan ik zeggen dat ikzelf als Nationaal Coördinator ook een trofee behaalde. Ik werd verkozen als “best National Coördinator of the year 2009”, met de woorden “een vrouw die gezorgd heeft dat ze een team in België bij elkaar heeft gebracht. “For exceptional services rendered to the association and the industry it serves”.

Al deze mensen hierboven vernoemd, hebben deze titels kunnen behalen door de ongelofelijke steun en inzet van mensen achter de schermen, zowel nationaal als internationaal, maar in het bijzonder door baristi, trainers en sponsors van de vzw Belgian Coffee Education. Bravo!

Belgium third best Coffee nation of the world!

Dear SCAE Members, sponsors and coffee lovers.

It is a great honour for me to say that we brought our little country Belgium onto the coffee map.

I’m very proud to announce that Peter Hernou became World Champion in the SCAE World Latte Art Championship 2009 on the 26th of June. Together with his wife Petra, he is a independent coffee consultant and trainer in different disciplines of coffee; Latte Art is his speciality.

This title gives a lot of possibilities for the Belgian Coffee market: a return for our members and especially for the sponsors of the association Belgian Coffee Education. Our sincere thank you to all people who’ve supported us.

In the World Championship Cuptasting we came 2nd. Bart Van Sanden of Efico (green coffee) represented our country in “cupping Coffee”. Efico has the honour to have the 2nd best cupper of the World.

In the World Championships Czeve/Ibrik we came 4th with Violeta Leci. Making a Turkish Coffee, Czeve, Mokka, is the oldest way to make and serve a coffee. Giving old culture and traditions to others, taking time to make a coffee and serve it is amazing to see.

In the World Championship Coffee in Good Spirits was Ronny Billemon the one who came 8th. It was the First time for Belgium that someone competed in this discpline about coffee with alcohol.

Earlier this year Melanie Nunes came 27th in de World Barista Championships in Atlanta. She was in the top 5 of the female baristi of the World.

But that is not all. Every year SCAE members nominate those who perform exceptional service in the Coffee industry. Also here there was a trophy for Belgium. Rob Berghmans from the espressobar Caffé Nation received an Award for Hidden Treasure.

Very modestly, but also very proudly, I can say that I, Jeanne Gennar also received a trophy for best National Coordinator of the year 2009 -- "For exceptional services rendered to the association and the industry it serves."

We came 3rd in the category of best Coffee Nation of the World. We got congratulations from all over the World for being the best Coffee-TEAM of the World.

All these people mentioned here, got their titles and trophies because of the enormous support of many people behind the scenes. All details and all the people who helped us are the basis of this huge success on an international and national level -- but especially the baristi, trainers and sponsors from the Belgian Coffee Education.

Onze kandidaten voor de wereld finale zijn allen bekend nu

Voor de World Ibrik Championship zal Violeta Leci ons vertegenwoordigen. Haar roots zijn in Albanië, maar ze leeft en werkt al enkele jaren in België.

Ronny Billemon zal ons vertegenwoordigen in de World Coffee in Good Spirits. Peter Hernou voor de 3de keer in World LatteArt Championship. En voor Cuptasting zal Bart Vansanden voor de 2de maal zijn mannetje staan in de World Cuptasting Championship.

Onze Melanie Nunes heeft ons land een stapje dichter naar de top gebracht. Ze was 27ste in een lijst van 52 deelnemers. Wat een heel goede prestatie is, gezien het haar eerste deelname was, zowel in eennationaal kampioenschap als in een internationaal kampioenschap. Ze zit in de top van de wereld en is 5de in de lijst van de vrouwen.

Wij zijn heel erg trots op haar.

We have chosen someone to represent Belgium for the World Cezve/Ibrik Championship. Her name is Violeta Leci. Her roots are in Albania, but she has lived for a long time in Belgium.

For the World Latte Art Championship, we have Peter Hernou.

For the World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship, we have Ronny Billemon.

For the World Cup Tasters Championship, we have Bart Vansanden.

And our Melanie Nunes represented Belgium in Atlanta. We are very proud to say that she became 27th in the World Barista Championship. That is in the top of the baristi. She was 5th in list of women.... We are more than just proud. She trained very hard and her natural coconut flavour was all over to see and to taste.

TV coverage for 4th Cup Tasting Championship

The fourth edition of the Belgian Cup Tasting Championship, which takes place May 8, is to be featured in a Belgian television programme.

The programme, De Zevende Dag, hosted by journalist Alain Coninx, is to cover the Cup Tasting event, which will take place at Lion Products, Gestelhoflei 6, 2820 Bonheiden.

Coffee in Good Spirits 2009

Op 21 maart hadden we onze eigen kleine selectie voor Coffee in Good Spirits. De winnaar van dit kleine gebeuren is Ronny Billemon.

Het is de tweede keer dat België zal deelnemen aan de wereldfinale voor Coffee in Good Spirits. Dit zal plaats vinden in Juni 2009 te Keulen. Wij willen natuurlijk voor de team-titel gaan.

Ronny zal België met eer en trots vertegenwoordigen.

On 21st of March we had our own little selection for Coffee in Good Spirits. The winner was Ronny Billemon.

It is the second time that Belgium will compete in the World Championships for Coffee in Good Spirits. This will be in June 2009 in Cologne. We want to go for the Best Nation title, too, of course!

Ronny will represent Belgium with honour and pride.

4de editie van de Belgian Barista Championship en de 2de editie van de Belgian Latte Art Championship

Op Vrijdag 5 december 2008 had België haar 4de editie van de Belgian Barista Championship en de 2de editie van de Belgian Latte Art Championship. Dit jaar stonden we op de grootste Culinaire consumentenbeurs van België 'Kokerello'. . .

Onze fantastische internationale jury: John Sherwood , Pauline Sherwood, Steffen Schwarz, Jon Willassen, Kenneth Cooper, Paul Meikle-Janney, Elisabeth Sereno, Marek Robacha en Christopher Salierno deden een geweldig goede job.

Een complete, verfrissende verrassing was de winnares Melanie Nunes. Een wondermooie, warmhartige jonge vrouw won dit kampioenschap. Melanie kreeg ook de prijs voor de beste cappuccino en de beste signature drink.

Tweede was Stefaan Behaege. Hij bracht een professionele presentatie. Beiden kandidaten werden getraind door de gebroers Deprez van Viva Sara. Erg bekend in België. Derde was Jessie Bervoets, leerling van Rob Bergmans van Caffé Nation in Antwerpen. Rob heeft een eigenzinnige mening over koffie en dat kon je zien in deze wedstrijd. Jessie kreeg de prijs voor de beste espresso. Een hele eer voor Rob en welverdiend. Jessie is een perfect getrainde barista.

Onze werkelijk ongelofelijk grote Latte Art wedstrijd is gewonnen door Peter Hernou. In Antwerpen 2007 behaalde hij de 7de plaats. In Denemarken 2008 had hij echte pech. En nu stond hij als een echte ster op het podium. Professioneel, geconcentreerd en stijlvol.

Tweede was Jeroen Clauwers van Lavazza. Hij was erg trots met zijn prijs en voelde zich werkelijk goed in deze wedstrijd. Derde was François Knopes van Cafés Knopes. Hij was de enige kandidaat die deelnam aan beiden wedsstrijden, Barista en LatteArt. Het was een echte uitdaging voor hem. Hij gaf ons een fantastische show in de LatteArt. We zullen François terug ontmoeten in de cuptasting voorjaar 2009.

Presentator van de wedstrijden was de welbekende Manu Demets die een prachtige presentatie deed.

Wij zijn allen heel erg trots op onze deelnemers. Een heleboel nieuwe, jonge mensen, die veel plezier hebben en hard werken. Het was puur genot om dit jong talent bezig te zien.

Report from the 4th Belgian Barista Championship and 2nd Latte Art Championship

On Friday, December 5, Belgium held its 4th National Barista Championship and the 2nd edition of its Latte Art Championship, reports National Coordinator Jeanne Gennar.

This year we were at Belgium's biggest culinary consumer fair, Kokerello.

Our wonderful international jury -- John Sherwood , Pauline Sherwood, Steffen Schwarz, Jon Willassen, Kenneth Cooper, Paul Meikle-Janney, Elisabeth Sereno, Marek Robacha and Christopher Salierno -- did a fantastic job.

There was a complete and refreshing surprise in the Barista Championship this year: Melanie Nunes, a beautiful, and warm-hearted young girl won this year and she also took the prize for the best cappuccino and the best signature drink.

Second was Stefaan Behaege, who made a very professional presentation. Both candidates of the top two winners were trained by the brothers Deprez, from the Viva Sara café, which is well known in Belgium.

Third in the Barista Championship was Jessie Bervoets, the pupil of Rob Bergmans from Caffé Nation in Antwerp. Rob has a mind of his own about coffee. You could see that, because Jessie won the prize for the best espresso as well -- a big honour for Rob, and well deserved. Jessie proved to be a very well trained barista.

Our really big Latte Art Championship was won by Peter Hernou. In Antwerp 2007, he came seventh in the World Championships in Latte Art, although in 2008 in Denmark he had bad luck. This time he showed he was a shining star: Professional, with good concentration and stylish.

Second in Latte Art was Jeroen Clauwers from Lavazza. He was very proud and felt really good about this Championship.

Third was François Knopes from Cafés Knopes, the only competitor who competed in both the Barista and Latte Art Championships. It was a challenge for him, but he gave us a great show and presentation in Latte Art. We will meet François again for the cup tasting championship in spring 2009.

The master of ceremonies for the Championships was the well known Manu Demets, who made a fantastic presentation.

We are all very proud of our competitors, a lot of new and young people who had a lot of fun, but also worked very hard. It was a pleasure to watch all this new talent. -- Jeanne Gennar

Wereldfinales SCAE in Kopenhagen 2008

Van 19 juni tot en met 22 juni vonden in Kopenhagen, Denemarken de wereldfinales van de SCAE (speciality coffee association of Europe) plaats. Tijdens deze 4 dagen kregen meer dan 120 deelnemers van over de hele wereld de kans om zichzelf te bewijzen als ware meesters in het espressozetten, de LatteArt, cuptasting… verdeeld over verschillende kampioenschappen. In een warme, goedlachse sfeer probeerden de kandidaten de internationale jury te imponeren met geurige aroma’s, verbluffende prestaties, kleurrijke presentaties en perfecte afwerkingen.

De Belgen waren dit jaar goed vertegenwoordigd. Voor de eerste keren waren we met een serieus team aanwezig en dit dankzij de Belgische sponsors: Java, Lavazza, Rombouts, Caffé Kimbo, Schuilenburg, Portion Pack, Lion Products, Routin, Efico en Hans Onan. Ook bij de organisatie kon men rekenen op de toegewijde medewerking van de Belgen. Jeanne Gennar, nationaal coördinator SCAE België, was voor deze gelegenheid Baristamama. Zij begeleidde de verschillende deelnemers in hun voorbereidingstijd. Manu Demets, de wedstrijdorganisator van SCAE België, leidde de wedstrijden als MC of presentator bij de World LatteArt Championship en World Coffee-in-Good-Spirits Championship. Hij zorgde voor een onvergetelijke ambiance en dat de teamspirit van elk land tot zijn recht kwam.

Voor de World Barista Championship haalde de Belg Detlev Battiau van Detlev’s Barista Service, de 19de plaats van de 51 deelnemers. België nam voor de derde maal deel aan de World Barista. Elk jaar wordt het niveau van de kandidaten hoger en moet er harder geknokt worden voor die eerste plaats.

Bart Van Sanden van Efico, belandde precies in het midden met de World Cuptasting Championship. De 15de plaats. Een knap staaltje van proeven in een onvoorstelbaar spannende wedstrijd.

De Belgische deelnemer voor World LatteArt Championship, Peter Hernou, individeel trainer voor LatteArt, had pech. Hij verloor grip ophet melkkannetje waardoor hij in ‘overtime’ ging. Toch zette hij zijn voorstelling op een professionele manier verder en eindigde op de 20ste plaats van de 25 deelnemers.

We hadden geen deelnemer voor de World Coffee-in-Good-Spirits en zo konden we niet meedingen naar de prijs voor ‘the best nation’.

Nieuw dit jaar was de World Ibrik Championship, het Turkse ritueel van koffiemaken. De Belg Patrick Hanssens van Grootmoeders Koffie, gaf een schitterende voorstelling met zijn vrouw Vinciane. Ze scoorde de 6de plaats van de 12 deelnemers, dat leverde hen een trofee op.

België kon echter nog met een trofee naar huis gaan. Bij het uitreiken van de SCAE Awards, kreeg Efico de trofee voor The Innovation and Design Award, die trots in ontvangst werd genomen door afgevaardigd bestuurder Michel Germanes.

World Championships in Copenhagen 2008

Between the 19th and the 22nd June, the SCAE World Championships took place in Copenhagen, Denmark. During those four days more than 120 competitors got the chance to prove themselves as real masters of Espresso, Latte Art, Cup Tasting and other skills in the different competitions. The atmosphere was very friendly and warm. The participants tried to impress the international jury with their fine aromas and their amazing skills in producing colourful presentations and perfect end results.

Belgium, for the first time, had a very strong team. This came about with help from our sponsors: Java, Lavazza, Rombouts, Caffé Kimbo, Schuilenburg, Lion Products, Portion Pack, Routin, Efico and Hans Onan.

Also helping with the organisation of the World Championships was the Belgian National Coördinator, Jeanne Gennar, a real “Barista Mama.” She guided the competitors on stage.

Manu Demets, organiser of the Belgian SCAE Championships, was MC. He did a fantastic job with the timing and he helped the audience enjoy the great ambiance. He also brought the team spirit of every country very much to life.

In the World Barista Championship, the Belgian Detlev Battiau, from Detlev’s Barista Service, came 19th out of the 51 competitors. Every year the level of the competitors grows stronger. It is a real struggle to get to first place.

Belgian competitor Peter Hernou, independent Latte Art trainer, had bad luck. He lost grip on his milk jug, and so went ‘overtime’. But he continued in a very professional way, and ended up 20th out of the 25 participants.

In the World Coffee in Good Spirits, we unfortunately had no competitor—so we couldn’t go for the Best Nation award.

For the World Cup Tasting Championship, Bart Van Sanden from Efico did a really good job. He came 15th out of 30 competitors—right in the middle of this very exciting competition.

New this year was the World Ibrik Championship. Patrick Hanssens and his wife Vinciane, from Grandmothers Coffee, gave a marvelous show and won the trophy for the 6th place. There were 12 competitors. Patrick was the only competitor who was not familiar to the Turkish way of making coffee.

Belgium won another trophy as well. During the SCAE Awards for Coffee Excellence party, Michel Germanes, delegate Director of Efico, with much pride accepted the Innovation & Design Award.
